Back pain affecting your everyday life?
Back pain can affect work, sleep, exercise, hobbies and the simple movements you usually take for granted. It can also make you uncertain about what you should be doing, what you should avoid and whether your symptoms are something to worry about.
At Ascent Physiotherapy & Wellness, we take the time to understand your symptoms, your health, your movement and what matters most to you.
Your physiotherapist will assess you carefully, explain their findings in clear language and work with you to develop a plan that is appropriate for your needs and goals.
The aim is to help you feel more informed, more confident in your movement and better supported in your recovery.
How can physiotherapy help
with
back pain?
Back pain is different for every person. There is rarely one simple explanation, and the things that influence your symptoms can vary over time.
Your physiotherapist will listen carefully to your story, assess your movement and function, and consider the factors that may be contributing to your pain.
Depending on your needs, physiotherapy may include:
clear advice and education about your symptoms
exercises to improve movement, strength and confidence
progressive rehabilitation
support with returning to work, exercise, sport or everyday activities
hands-on treatment where appropriate
practical strategies to help you manage flare-ups and stay active
The aim is not simply to reduce pain for a short time. It is to help you understand what is happening, feel more confident in your body and make steady progress towards the activities that matter to you.
New, recurring and persistent back pain
Back pain can begin suddenly, build gradually or return from time to time. For some people it settles quickly. For others, it can continue for longer or become a recurring problem. Whatever the pattern, your experience matters.
At Ascent Physiotherapy & Wellness, we look at more than the painful area alone. We consider how your symptoms are affecting your daily life and whether factors such as movement, strength, activity levels, work, sleep and previous experiences may be relevant.
Your physiotherapist will work with you to understand your current situation and develop a realistic rehabilitation plan that fits around your life.
For people with persistent or recurring back pain, progress is not always a straight line. Flare-ups can happen. Our role is to help you understand them, respond with confidence and continue moving towards your goals.
Do I need a scan for my back pain?
Not everyone with back pain needs a scan.
For many people, imaging does not change the early management of back pain. Whether a scan is appropriate depends on your symptoms, your medical history and the findings from your clinical assessment.
Your physiotherapist will consider whether there is anything in your presentation that suggests further medical assessment or investigation may be needed.
If this is the case, we will explain our concerns clearly and advise you on the most appropriate next step.
For many people, the most helpful starting point is a careful assessment, a clear explanation and a plan to help them move forward with confidence.
What happens at
your first appointment
Understanding
Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to understand what is happening and how your back pain is affecting you. Your physiotherapist will ask about your symptoms, your general health, your daily activities and what you would like to be able to do more comfortably or confidently.
Physical Assessment
They will then carry out an appropriate physical assessment. This may include looking at your movement, strength, function and other factors that are relevant to your symptoms.
Explanation
We will explain the findings in clear language and discuss what they may mean for you.
Plan & Next Steps
Together, we will agree on a plan that is appropriate for your needs and goals. This may include advice, exercise, rehabilitation and hands-on treatment where it is likely to be helpful. The aim is for you to leave your first appointment with a clearer understanding of your situation and a practical sense of what to do next. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions and talk through any concerns you have about your back pain.

When should back pain be assessed urgently?
Most back pain is not caused by a serious medical problem.
There are, however, some symptoms that need urgent medical assessment.
Seek urgent medical advice if your back pain is accompanied by:
- new changes to bladder or bowel control
- altered sensation around the genital or saddle area
- significant or rapidly worsening weakness
- feeling seriously unwell alongside your back pain
If you are unsure whether your symptoms need urgent medical attention, contact NHS 111 for advice. Call 999 in a medical emergency.
If your symptoms do not fall into these categories but you are concerned about them, you can still arrange an assessment and discuss what is happening with your physiotherapist.
