Physiotherapy for neck pain in Eastham, Wirral & Liverpool

When it feels like there is no escaping neck pain, understanding what is happening matters.

Living with neck pain can be utterly exhausting

Your head might feel incredibly heavy. You cannot find a comfortable position. Sleeping, concentrating, working or driving may become difficult.

And sometimes it is not just your neck...
You might experience headaches, dizziness, pain travelling into your shoulder or arm, or sensations such as tingling, pins and needles or numbness.
When several symptoms seem to appear together, it is understandable to start wondering:
What is actually wrong with me? Will this ever get better?

At Ascent, we start by listening carefully to the whole story.
We assess your symptoms, look for signs that may indicate where they are coming from and, importantly, consider whether anything you tell us means further medical assessment may be appropriate.
Then we explain what we find in plain English and agree what happens next.
The aim is for you to leave understanding more about your symptoms, not frightened by them.

Neck pain does not always stay in your neck

The neck is closely connected with the head, upper back, shoulders, arms and nervous system. That means a neck problem does not always present as one neat pain in one neat place.
Some people experience pain around the shoulder blade or into the arm. Others describe headaches, altered sensation, pins and needles, numbness or dizziness alongside their neck symptoms. These symptoms can have different causes, and we do not assume they are all coming from your neck simply because your neck hurts.
Our job is to listen, examine and start joining the dots.

What we assess when you have neck pain

Your assessment starts with a detailed conversation about your symptoms and how they behave.
Where appropriate, this may include neurological or other clinical screening to determine whether physiotherapy is appropriate or whether further medical assessment is needed.
If physiotherapy is appropriate, we'll assess the movement, strength, function and other factors relevant to your individual presentation.

Making sense of a collection of symptoms

When several things hurt or feel strange at once, the whole problem can begin to feel enormous.
Part of our job is to make it more understandable. We explain which symptoms may be related, what we think could be contributing and what we can work on.
The aim is to replace “What on earth is wrong with me?” with a clearer understanding of what may be happening and what we can do next.

What can we improve?

Once we understand your presentation, we look at what we can change.

Depending on what we find, that might include movement through your neck and upper back, strength and physical capacity, muscle control and coordination, shoulder function, compensatory movement or guarding, confidence in movement, tolerance to work, driving, exercise or sport, and strategies for managing flare-ups.

Your rehabilitation programme should make sense for you, rather than being a generic sheet of neck exercises. We explain what we want you to do, why you are doing it, how much to do and how we intend to progress things as your body responds.

RESEARCH & PERFORMANCE

From painful necks
to
high-performance necks

Ascent's founder and Clinical Director, Cliona McRobert, has been involved in research examining neck function in Royal Air Force Typhoon pilots, whose necks are exposed to exceptional physical demands.

It reflects an important part of the Ascent approach: rehabilitation isn't simply about reducing pain. We want to understand what your body needs to be capable of and progressively prepare it for those demands.

What happens at your first neck physiotherapy appointment

We will listen to your story, understand how your neck is affecting you and what you want to get back to, then carry out an assessment appropriate to your symptoms. We will explain what we find in plain English and agree the next steps together. If we think you need further investigation or another healthcare professional, we will tell you that too.
