Physiotherapy for shoulder pain in Eastham, Wirral

Shoulders can be complex. That doesn’t mean they need to be confusing.

Shoulder pain can feel frustratingly unpredictable.
Perhaps you cannot lie on it at night without waking up. It clicks and clunks. You can be absolutely fine, then reach in one particular direction and suddenly find yourself in agony for days.

Sometimes the pain does not even stay in your shoulder. It can travel into your arm, around your shoulder blade or towards your neck, leaving you wondering where the problem is actually coming from.

We understand shoulders, and we are not intimidated by complicated symptoms.
At Ascent, we take time to piece together what may be contributing to your particular pattern of pain and movement. Then we explain what we find, what we think it means and what we can do about it.

The aim is for you to leave feeling less confused by your shoulder and much clearer about the way forward.

Your shoulder does not work in isolation, neither do we assess it that way.

Whether you are dealing with shoulder pain, a rotator cuff tendon problem, shoulder instability, any kind of shoulder dislocation or have had shoulder surgery, we look at how your shoulder moves, its strength and control, and any restrictions or compensations that may be relevant.
We don't necessarily stop at the shoulder. Depending on your symptoms, we may also assess your shoulder blade, neck, upper back or nervous system.
We piece those findings together with your symptoms, concerns and goals to understand what may be contributing and build an individual rehabilitation plan.

Why does my shoulder hurt at night?

Night pain is common with several shoulder problems. An irritated shoulder may be particularly sensitive to sustained positions or pressure, and lying directly on it can be uncomfortable.
The pattern of your night pain, alongside your other symptoms and assessment findings, helps us understand what may be contributing.

Why does my shoulder click or clunk?

Shoulders can make all sorts of noises. A click or clunk does not automatically mean something is damaged or that your shoulder is deteriorating.

This information gives us clues that help us understand whether the noise is relevant to your problem, and what diagnosis you may have, or whether clicking/clunking is simply something your shoulder happens to do.

Why does my shoulder pain
travel down my arm?

Pain does not always stay neatly over the structure that feels sore. Human anatomy is a littel more complex than that for lots of clever reasons. Symptoms around the shoulder can sometimes be influenced by the shoulder itself, surrounding muscles and tissues, the neck, upper back or the nervous system.

That is one reason we do not assess your shoulder in isolation.

What can be improved in my shoulder?

Once we have a clearer understanding of your shoulder, we look at what we can work on.

Depending on what we find, that might include:

movement

strength

control

confidence

tolerance to work, exercise or sport

RESEARCH & CLINICAL REASONING

Research-informed shoulder care

Ascent's founder and Clinical Director, Cliona McRobert, completed her PhD in treatment targeting for individual patients with musculoskeletal shoulder disorders: Starting with moderators of treatment response.
Her research explored treatment decision-making for shoulder pain and factors that may influence an individual's response to treatment. That thinking has helped shape Ascent's highly individualised approach to shoulder rehabilitation.

What happens at your first shoulder physiotherapy appointment

We will listen to your story, understand how your shoulder is affecting you and what you want to get back to, then carry out an assessment appropriate to your symptoms. We will explain what we find in plain English and agree the next steps together.
If we think you need further investigation or another healthcare professional, we will tell you that too.
